As environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles continue to intersect with AI and sustainability, adoption is no longer just a good idea—it’s a necessity for long-term success.
Lenovo is dedicated to creating a more sustainable AI future for all. In its 18th annual ESG Report for FY 2023-24, Lenovo showcases its strong commitment to sustainability and shares its progress in driving ESG initiatives forward in the age of AI.
Climate and Energy: Setting Ambitious Goals
Lenovo is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. The company is on track to hit its first milestone on the path to net-zero by reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50 percent before 2030. Additionally, Lenovo aims to slash Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services by two-thirds (66%), with reductions of 35 percent from solid products and 25 percent from upstream transportation and distribution.
These achievements underscore Lenovo's robust strategies in combating climate change, which include ramping up renewable energy usage, improving energy efficiency, streamlining manufacturing and logistics processes, and cutting down on transportation activities.
Circular Economy: Pioneering Sustainability Through Innovation
Lenovo takes a holistic approach to managing product lifecycles, focusing on waste reduction and resource optimization. Since 2017, Lenovo has increased its efforts in reusing and recycling products by almost 40 percent, mainly through its product take-back programs. In the last four years alone, Lenovo has reused or recycled over 94,000 metric tons of customer products, equivalent to the weight of 87 million ThinkPads.
By 2025 all Lenovo laptops, desktops, workstations, and monitors will contain post-consumer recycled content (PCC) plastics. The company is also ramping up use of recycled fiber, recycled plastic, and eco-friendly materials like bamboo, sugarcane, and sustainably sourced fiber for packaging. The aim is to have 90 percent of plastic packaging for laptops, desktops, and workstations made from recycled materials.
Social Responsibility and AI Governance
In addition to focusing on environmental sustainability efforts, the company strongly emphasizes social responsibility initiatives. Lenovo has made significant progress in creating a diverse and inclusive workplace environment, with women making up nearly 30 percent of technical teams. Lenovo is committed to achieving a global female executive representation target of 27 percent, driving innovation forward and aligning with its vision for smarter technology for all.
